I LOVE CHOCOLATE
October 12, 2007
Chocolate is not really a food for me. It’s a drug experience. It’s a chemical holiday. Thai food falls into the same category. When I eat it, I feel as though I’ve gone to another place. Nothing else in the food realm has this effect on me
Try the High Test!
I’m a dark chocolate fan. I used to be able to eat milk chocolate, but now, there seems no point to it at all.
It all began with 75% cocoa. Once I get a bee in my bonnet, I can become a little obsessed, so I moved up to Cote d’Or’s 86% or Lindt 85%. Now that‘s pretty good stuff. And then one day, what do my wondering eyes behold but 99%!!! The ultimate trip! My sister tried some and had to spit it out. She said it sucked all the saliva from her mouth. True, but a little harsh, I thought. My perfect happy place is to take a piece of the 86 and a piece of the 99 and eat them together. Because the flavor is so intense, I don’t need to eat a lot of it to get my chocolate hit for the day.
I can certainly eat chocolate baked into cakes or squares but it’s nothing even remotely related to the pure unadulterated thing. If I must eat them though, I love those heavy, dense flourless chocolate tortes. My wonderful sister-in-law makes a brownie recipe that is so chocolate-loaded that it brings tears to my eyes. I have seen grown men unable to stop eating them.
Blame it on your genetics
My mother ate chocolate after every meal. She would keep a stash of it in various places in the house. There were also tubs of chocolate for the dog. Of course, the children knew where the good stuff was but my father had to share the dog’s chocolate. I have a very bright Dad; I’m sure he knew full well where the Belgian chocolate was but, in the scheme of things, it was more important to keep it sanctified.
I have a sister who can make chocolate that runs circles around anything you can buy. There are some good chocolates out there, high end, European, I know them well. My sister’s chocolates are beyond them all. I do not exaggerate this claim. Family ties do not take precedence over my chocolate integrity. Everyone was put on this Earth with one special gift, one Universe-given reason for being here. My sister’s purpose is to make the best chocolates you have ever tasted and she excels at it. The cocoa content doesn’t go over 75% so they are more of a food than an out-of-body experience like the 99, but the flavor combinations are fantastic (garam masala is my favorite). My sister is no longer making these chocolates; she just ran out of time. We are a family of chocolate lovers, and all of our children are as well, so we are sad but we understand.
Among the Top 5 in your anti-aging arsenal
Do you know the cookbook Eat, Shrink and Be Merry by sisters Janet and Greta Podleski? It’s a good book. It contains healthy recipes that children and husbands will actually eat. In it, they mention Dove chocolate as a brand that is made from a particular cocoa and contains more of the antioxidants and other health benefits of chocolate. I look for it in food stores in every town I visit and I cannot find this product, so if anyone knows where you can buy it, please leave me a comment. It may be marketed as Galaxy in the USA. ( Update : my friend, Gina, who left a great comment below sent me some Dove Dark; it is great. Thank you, Gina!).
I was very happy to read Fran Kerr’s article Chocolate Can Prevent Cavities. Early research is suggesting that there is an extract in cocoa that may harden tooth enamel. We are just beginning to learn the benefits of this wonderful substance.
The fantastic book that everyone should read, entitled Foods That Fight Cancer, tells us of chocolate’s power as an anti-cancer drug. Did you know that there are 11 other foods known to slow or prevent tumor growth ? And that you have cancers starting in your body every day? The normal cells that surround the cancer are supposed to detect this and kill the cancer cell, but what if they miss a few? Why would you not use every available weapon to help yourself, especially when these are cheap (certainly cheaper than supplements) and completely safe? READ THE BOOK ; it will make a difference in your life.
I’d like to tell you that I eat chocolate for medicinal purposes, for the magnesium and the antioxidants, but that’s only part of it. It’s a stimulant and a sedative all in one. Since dark chocolate has a low glycemic load, its consumption is entirely justifiable at any time and may even replace the occasional meal, as circumstance dictates.
Chocolate is anti-aging and good for the soul. That’s what this blog is all about.

Okay now you have me thinking….I have seen Dove chocolate somewhere recently and living so close to the US I wonder if it has been there. Someone told me they sell it at the Jean Coutu (local pharmacy) and I intend to check that out. Perhaps I am merely remembering their wonderful ads on television and superimposing them on my active memory to make me believe I have actually, physically held them in my hand. I will keep you poated.
And by the way I completely concur with the chocolate experience. Oddly enough after the delivery of my first child the pediatrician had written on my file that I had an addiction to chocolate. This could have been because I was gestational diabetic and therefore all forms of sugar were completely off limits if I wanted to control the condition without medication. I guess I was delirious and calling for it in my rants…who knew?
Hi
I too love chocolate. I have a secretive way of eating chocolate. I like to get in to bed, knowing everyone else is asleep and eat small piece of cholocate as I read, just before going to sleep.
I love the rush that good dark chocolate provides, the whole sensation from the melt in our mouth to the body rush after the chocolate has hit your system. THe best I have every had was a Russian chocolate bar called A. Korkunov. I can only find it when traveling and have the opportnity to hit good food stores. Note if looking for this product the labeling is in Russian.
Get if you can as you will have nothing finer.
