MY LETTER TO DOVE
November 27, 2007
Dove Dear Body,
I had to live 46 years to no longer be hindered by intimidation, guilt, or inadequacy.
I had to give birth three times to realize that every human being is a miracle.
I had to search and try and fail for years to see that my answers are not behind me. I’m looking ahead. I’m keeping the wind at my back. I’m redefining my questions each day and at the same time, I feel the answers lined up now and rushing towards me.
I have no words to express the gratitude I feel each day, that I am still here and that my family is with me. I know many who are not so blessed.
I had to waste opportunities to finally realize that everything is happening exactly when it is supposed to. I am no longer in a hurry.
I had to suffer loss to know without doubt what matters to me. I know what I can’t live with and what I can’t live without, and I don’t have to justify either one.
I know exactly what it means to be me, and I accept that it will change over time. I apologize to no one. If the lines on my face are the price for this freedom to be who I was born to be, I pay it gladly.
In all its horror and glory, the human race is amazing and fascinating and complicated. We are capable to cruelty but also of soaring imagination. I try to never be ashamed to belong. I want to play a part in making the future better than the past, to help humanity grow beyond its present flailing adolescence.
I thank Dove and all those voices, individual and corporate, that strive to strengthen the position of women on this planet. Too many centuries have passed where the many forms of oppression have silenced the unique offering of women. Corporations that choose to lead by example are worthy of acclaim.
Sincerely,
Christine
Write a letter of your own
By following this link, you can write your own letter to Dove, and to the world, about your own reasons for celebrating your age.
NOTE : This letter was not published on Dove’s site, despite 4 attempts. The reason given was that the letter either contained inappropriate words or a third-party name. I presume the problem was the inclusion of the name of this blog site. Nonetheless, this remains what I have to say.
